Gaylord Texan Resort | DFW Family Getaway

Gaylord Texan Resort | DFW Family Getaway - Dining & Events in Grapevine, TX

The Gaylord Texan is a massive Grapevine resort built around four and a half acres of indoor atrium gardens, and here’s the part many families don’t realize: you don’t have to stay overnight to enjoy a lot of it. Day visitors are welcome to wander the atrium, eat at the restaurants, and take in the seasonal decorations, while overnight guests get a huge summer water park and the resort’s signature holiday events turn it into one of the biggest family destinations in North Texas each winter.

For Day Visitors: The Atrium

The heart of the resort is its climate-controlled atrium, with winding pathways, a river, waterfalls, and Texas-themed gardens all under glass. Families can walk it for free, grab a meal, and hunt for hidden details on the resort’s scavenger hunts. It’s an easy, low-cost way to spend an hour or two, especially as a cool escape from the Texas summer heat or a festive stroll during the holidays.

ICE! and Christmas — the Big Seasonal Draw

From mid-November through early January, the Gaylord Texan becomes a holiday spectacle, and this is the reason most families make the trip. The signature attraction, ICE!, features larger-than-life sculptures carved from more than two million pounds of ice, kept at a brisk 9 degrees (they hand out parkas). Recent years have themed it around Elf™ and Buddy the Elf. Beyond ICE!, the Christmas lineup includes ice tubing, Snowball Build & Blast, gingerbread decorating, and a holiday scavenger hunt, sold individually or in Silver, Gold, and Ultimate pass bundles. You do not need to be an overnight guest to buy tickets.

Staying Over: Paradise Springs Water Park

If you turn it into an overnight getaway, the 10-acre Paradise Springs Water Park is the summer payoff, open roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day with three waterslides, a play lagoon, an aquatic zipline, a 600-foot lazy river, hot tubs, and cabanas. One important note: Paradise Springs is exclusive to resort guests — there is no day pass for the water park, so it only factors in if you’re booking a room.

Best for Which Ages

Toddlers and preschoolers love the atrium gardens, the gentle scavenger hunts, and (for overnight guests) the play lagoon. Elementary-age kids get the most out of ICE!, ice tubing, and the water park’s slides. Tweens and teens enjoy the bigger slides and the sheer scale of the place. The holiday events in particular land well across every age.

Costs, Parking, and Timing

  • Walking the atrium is free. ICE! and the individual Christmas activities are ticketed, and the water park requires a room booking.
  • Day parking for non-guests runs about $40 at the convention-center garage or around $25 for off-site parking on select dates, so factor that in. Prices change, so confirm before you go.
  • Plan on an hour or two for a casual atrium visit, or a half day if you’re adding ICE! and the holiday activities.
